My Journey with PLTI
Chilah Harris-Wheeler, Class of 2025
I joined the Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) because I knew I wanted to make a difference—not just for my own family, but for others as well. I wasn’t exactly sure what that difference would look like, or how to begin, but I knew in my heart that I wanted to do something. PLTI gave me the direction, tools, and focus I needed to turn that desire into action.
Through this journey, I discovered that I have a voice—and, even more importantly, I learned how to use it. Today, I feel confident speaking not only to my peers, but also to state and even national representatives. I’ve found my power as a community advocate and a leader.
PLTI also gave me the opportunity to connect with other parents—not just from my own neighborhood, but from surrounding communities as well. Despite our different backgrounds and life experiences, we found common ground, shared values, and a powerful sense of unity. The barriers that often make programs like this difficult—like transportation and childcare—were thoughtfully addressed by PLTI, which made it possible for me to fully engage.
Having my children participate in CLTI (Children’s Leadership Training Institute) was another blessing. It gave them a chance to grow as young leaders, while also giving me peace of mind knowing they were close by, safe, and supported.
I have made lifelong friends and become part of a family—a village—of people I can turn to anytime. Though my community project is still in progress and has grown beyond what I first imagined, I know I have the backing of this new family. With their support, I know I can go above and beyond.
If you are a parent, caregiver, or someone who has ever felt that pull—that nudge inside that says you’re meant to do more or make a difference—PLTI is for you. The 21 weeks is just the beginning. And it is worth every second.
Sincerely,
Chilah Harris-Wheeler
